Robert & Dixie North: Building a Legacy One Generation at a Time

The Arabian horse has always been a breed built upon vision.

Long before a champion entered the show ring, before a pedigree appeared in a sales catalog, and before a bloodline influenced breeders around the world, someone first imagined what was possible. They saw not only the horse standing before them, but the generations that might follow.

Few breeders embodied that vision more completely than Robert and Dixie North.

For more than five decades, Robert and Dixie North quietly and methodically built one of the most respected breeding programs in the Arabian horse world. Their story is not simply one of championships won, stallions acquired, or ribbons collected. It is the story of two people who devoted their lives to the Arabian horse, guided by a breeding philosophy rooted in patience, conviction, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence.

Their journey began in 1972 with the purchase of a purebred Arabian mare.

Like so many horse lovers before them, Robert and Dixie entered the Arabian horse world through admiration and curiosity. They trained and exhibited their own horses, competed at Class A horse shows, and immersed themselves in the culture, history, and beauty of the breed.

Success came quickly.

Just one year after entering the Arabian horse industry, the Norths earned a United States National Top Ten Championship with their very first show horse. While many would have been content with such an accomplishment, Robert and Dixie viewed it as the beginning of a much larger journey.

As their knowledge grew, so did their ambitions.

In 1981, they purchased a larger facility near San Diego, creating the opportunity to expand their breeding program and participate more actively in regional and national competition. They became involved in the *Aladdinn and *Muscat stallion syndicates and acquired select *Bask-bred mares and colts, immersing themselves in some of the most influential bloodlines of the era.

Outside of the horse world, Robert and Dixie were building a life together grounded in hard work, family, and shared purpose. While Robert enjoyed a successful corporate career, Dixie devoted herself to raising their family and creating the foundation upon which so much of North Arabians would eventually be built.

Nothing about North Arabians was handed to them.

Like many of the most successful breeding programs, it was built over decades through hard work, sacrifice, patience, and an unwavering commitment to continuous improvement.

Every expansion, every breeding decision, every opportunity, and every success was the result of years of dedication and effort.

As Robert’s business success created opportunities, Dixie helped transform those opportunities into a breeding program that would eventually earn worldwide respect and recognition.

Together, they built more than a farm.

They built a life around the Arabian horse.

Along the way, they developed a breeding philosophy that would guide every decision that followed.

Their approach was straightforward in principle, yet demanding in execution: take the best possible mare to the best available stallion and strive to produce offspring that embodied the finest qualities of both parents.

More importantly, they learned patience.

“If you truly believe in a mating, don’t give up if you don’t obtain the desired results with the first foal. Try again. We’re so often most pleasantly surprised by the rewards of tenacity and the courage of our convictions.”

The Norths believed that great horses rarely emerged from poor-quality mares, regardless of how celebrated the sire might be. As a result, they selected their broodmares with extraordinary care, emphasizing quality, disposition, conformation, beauty, athleticism, and long-term breeding value.

They were never breeding for the next horse.

They were breeding for the next generation.

The Mares Behind the Legacy

For all the celebrated stallions that passed through the gates of North Arabians, Robert and Dixie never lost sight of a simple truth:

Great breeding programs are built upon great mares.

Few horses illustrated that philosophy better than WA Marlaina Lee.

A daughter of the legendary Bey Shah, WA Marlaina Lee became one of the treasured foundation mares of the North Arabians breeding program. She possessed the qualities Robert and Dixie valued most—beauty, femininity, substance, disposition, and the ability to consistently pass those attributes to future generations.

From that mare came one of the most influential horses ever bred by North Arabians: Margarita PSY.

Unlike many of the celebrated horses associated with the program, Margarita PSY was not purchased. She was bred, foaled, and raised by Robert and Dixie North.

Through her sire, Padrons Psyche, and her dam, WA Marlaina Lee, she represented the successful blending of a pedigree the Norths believed could move the breed forward.

Over time, Margarita PSY became far more than one of Padrons Psyche’s most influential daughters.

She became a cornerstone of the North Arabians breeding program.

Perhaps fittingly, WA Marlaina Lee remains at North Arabians today at thirty-four years of age. More than three decades after becoming a cornerstone of the breeding program, she still enjoys the peaceful California pastures alongside her daughter, Margarita PSY.

In many ways, she serves as a living connection to the generations of horses, memories, and accomplishments that helped define North Arabians.

For Robert and Dixie, success was never measured solely by championships or trophies.

It was measured by generations.

Few mare families illustrate that philosophy more beautifully than the one established by WA Marlaina Lee and carried forward through her daughter Margarita PSY.

The Vision Takes Shape

In 1999, Robert and Dixie imported Brazilian National Champion Stallion Lumiar Amadeus, a horse widely recognized as Brazil’s all-time leading halter winner at that time.

His remarkable show career included titles such as Brazilian National Junior Champion Colt, Brazilian Gold Champion Colt, Best Junior Colt of the Year, Brazilian National Reserve Champion Stallion, and ultimately Brazilian National Champion Stallion. A U.S. National Top Ten Stallion, Lumiar Amadeus combined an extraordinary show record with the ability to consistently stamp his offspring with the qualities that made him so admired.

Sired by *RSD Dark Victory, the celebrated son of Bey Shah, and out of the aristocrat mare CA Sabrina, Lumiar carried the blood of *Bask and the legendary *Sanacht family. He embodied many of the qualities the Norths had spent decades pursuing—beauty, charisma, athleticism, and breeding value.

Lumiar went on to sire notable horses throughout the world, including World Champion Filly Deska, Brazilian National Champion Lumiar Jazz, Mediterranean Champion Lumiar Symphony, Canadian Top Ten Mare Hafati Futurista, and U.S. Top Ten Futurity Filly Lumiar Rosalita.

For Dixie North especially, Lumiar Amadeus occupied a special place in her heart.

Long before North Arabians became internationally known through Padrons Psyche, Lumiar represented the culmination of decades spent refining a vision for the Arabian horse.

Yet the following year altered the course of North Arabians forever.

In 2000, Robert and Dixie acquired one of the most influential Arabian stallions of the modern era: the legendary Padrons Psyche.

Few stallions shaped Arabian horse breeding as profoundly as Padrons Psyche. An AHW Sire of Significance, he ultimately sired more than 150 National, Canadian, Scottsdale, and World Champion and Reserve Champion offspring. His sons and daughters made their mark in more than a dozen countries, while his influence transformed breeding programs throughout North America, South America, Europe, Australia, and beyond.

Among his most notable offspring were FS Mystique Lady, Enzo, Magnum Psyche, Pstrategy, Margarita PSY, ML Mostly Padron, JBK Mystic Fawn, TAI Emerald Bay, Psymadre, NW Siena Psyche, and DA Love, the dam of DA Valentino.

But statistics told only part of the story.

What made Padrons Psyche extraordinary was his ability to consistently sire Arabian type, charisma, motion, presence, and unmistakable show-ring appeal. Trainers, breeders, judges, and spectators alike recognized that he was changing the landscape of the breed itself.

“The impact he had when you stood next to him was awe-inspiring. He made me want to cry with joy every time I saw him.” — Dixie North

Yet even as Padrons Psyche’s global influence expanded, the Norths were already planning for the future.

They understood that great breeding programs were not built upon a single stallion.

They were built upon generations.

Building Beyond Success

That vision led them to another remarkable horse.

Purchased from renowned Brazilian breeder Luciano Cury of Haras Boa Vista, Brazilian National Reserve Champion *Sir Fames HBV possessed the Arabian type, powerful motion, pedigree strength, and breeding potential the Norths valued so highly. Through his sire Ffamess and maternal lineage tracing to *Aladdinn, *Padron, *Salon, and Tornado, he represented an ideal outcross for the growing collection of Padrons Psyche daughters at North Arabians.

The strategy was deliberate.

Rather than merely preserving the success they had achieved, Robert and Dixie sought to expand it.

“He far exceeded our expectations as a breeding stallion.” — Dixie North

The emergence of second-generation horses combining the influence of Padrons Psyche, *Sir Fames HBV, and carefully cultivated North Arabians mare families confirmed that the breeding plan was working exactly as intended.

For Robert and Dixie, breeding was never about repeating the past.

It was about building the future.

Lumiar’s story at North Arabians did not end when his show career concluded.

Following a successful chapter as both a show horse and breeding stallion in California, Robert and Dixie made the difficult decision to allow Lumiar Amadeus to begin a new chapter abroad. In 2006, he was exported to England to stand at Halsdon Arabians, owned by the late Shirley and Charlie Watts.

The decision reflected the same thoughtful approach that had guided the Norths throughout their breeding careers.

“We thought that going to Shirley and Charlie Watts would be a great move for him with their beautiful mares for him to breed. I must say I cried when he left. I felt a very strong bond with him.” — Dixie North

At Halsdon Arabians, Lumiar continued the international influence that had defined his life, proving once again that great horses belong not to a single farm or country, but to generations.

If Padrons Psyche represented stewardship and *Sir Fames HBV represented strategy, Ever After NA represented something even more meaningful.

He was the culmination of four decades of breeding Arabian horses—a horse born from decades of learning, planning, and believing in a vision. Despite the unknowns that accompany every breeding decision, the Norths were ready for this next chapter—a fairytale story of Happily Ever After.

Bred by Robert and Dixie North, Ever After NA embodied decades of accumulated knowledge, breeding experience, and conviction. Sired by *Sir Fames HBV and out of Entaicying NA, he represented the successful blending of bloodlines the Norths had spent years carefully cultivating.

From the moment he was born, they sensed there was something special about him.

“The night Ever After NA was born, we were amazed. We had never seen such an impressive foal. Before he ever stood, he arched his lovely neck and whinnied, ‘I am here, and I am special.’

He certainly was.

He took all of the good qualities from both sides of his pedigree. As he matured into a breeding stallion and had his first offspring, we were more than pleased. He passed the best of himself and his pedigree on to his get.

Ever After wrote his own story.”

Time would prove Dixie correct.

Ever After NA passed the best of himself and his pedigree on to future generations, a legacy that continues today through descendants such as Makala NA, Maximillion NA, and beyond.

Through them, the qualities Robert and Dixie so admired in him continue to influence the breed, ensuring that his story did not end with his passing.

In many ways, Ever After NA became exactly what the Norths had hoped he would be—not simply a successful stallion, but a horse whose influence would be measured through the generations that followed.

A Legacy That Endures

That story is beautifully illustrated through one of the program’s most successful descendants.

Bred by Robert and Dixie North, Maximillion NA is sired by Dominic M and out of Makala NA, herself a daughter of Ever After NA and the treasured mare Margarita PSY.

His pedigree itself reflects the Norths’ breeding philosophy.

Through his dam, Makala NA, Maximillion carries the influence of two of the program’s most important horses: Ever After NA and Margarita PSY. In many ways, Maximillion NA represents the convergence of bloodlines Robert and Dixie spent decades cultivating and refining.

He is not simply the result of a successful mating.

He is the product of generations of planning, careful selection, and an unwavering commitment to breeding Arabian horses that combine beauty, athleticism, charisma, and enduring breeding value.

To study the pedigree of Maximillion NA is to see how the Norths’ vision was assembled over decades—piece by piece, generation by generation.

As a young horse, Maximillion NA earned the title of 2022 Scottsdale International Gold Champion Yearling Colt for owner Thiago Pontes and TP Arabians before being exported to Brazil. There, he continued his rise, culminating in his 2024 Brazilian National Champion Young Stallion title and establishing himself as an influential sire.

Yet the story did not end there.

At the 2026 Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, Maximillion NA’s legacy came full circle when his daughter, Aryna TPA, was named Scottsdale Junior Champion Filly under the presentation of Sandro Pinha for owners John and Sharon Ames. Bred and foaled in Brazil by Thiago Pontes and out of the exceptional mare Rhona Vul Do Divino, Aryna TPA represented the thoughtful blending of influential bloodlines and the continuation of a breeding vision that spanned continents and generations.

Nor was Aryna TPA the only recent example of the Norths’ enduring influence.

In 2023, Vivionce NA earned Scottsdale Reserve Champion Senior Yearling Filly honors before going on to capture a U.S. National Top Ten title in the Yearling Filly division for owners Jeff and Elizabeth Palmer of Minnesota.

Like so many successful North Arabians horses, her pedigree reflected generations of thoughtful breeding decisions. Vivionce carried the influence of Ever After NA through her dam, Vintage Psylk NA. Sired by Dominic M and out of Vintage Psylk NA, Vivionce represented another branch of the carefully cultivated North Arabians family tree. Vintage Psylk NA was by Ever After NA and out of JA Psilk N Lace, a daughter of Padrons Psyche and a granddaughter of the legendary Tornado. In a single pedigree, one finds the influence of Ever After NA,

Padrons Psyche, and the bloodlines the Norths spent decades carefully assembling.

The enduring influence of Ever After NA and Padrons Psyche was again evident through Magnolia Rose NA and Magnolia Leigh NA.

Magnolia Rose NA, owned by Sonrisa Arabians, captured the 2025 Scottsdale Signature Stallion Futurity Champion Yearling Filly title before returning in 2026 to earn a unanimous championship in the Scottsdale Signature Two-Year-Old Filly division. Her maternal sister, Magnolia Leigh NA, followed with a unanimous championship in the 2026 Scottsdale Signature Yearling Filly class.

Their dam, Mystic Magnolia PF, represented another example of the Norths’ breeding philosophy in action. Sired by Ever After NA and out of the Padrons Psyche daughter Mystic Rose BHF, Mystic Magnolia PF combined two of the most influential stallions in North Arabians history. Dig deeper still and the pedigree reveals the enduring influence of Ali Jamaal and Bey Shah through Mystic Rose BHF’s maternal lineage.

While Magnolia Rose NA carried that heritage forward through her sire Ibn Farid UAE, Magnolia Leigh NA combined the same maternal strength with the influence of Dominic M.

Though different in their paternal lines, both mares stood as examples of how thoughtfully cultivated mare families continue to reward breeders generation after generation.

Another recent standout was Marguerite NA, who earned Scottsdale Top Ten Yearling Filly honors in 2025.

Sired by Dominic M and out of the famed Margarita PSY, Marguerite represented one of the most important maternal lines ever developed at North Arabians. Bred by Robert and Dixie North, Margarita PSY was not purchased but carefully produced from the treasured Bey Shah daughter WA Marlaina Lee and the legendary Padrons Psyche. Through Marguerite, that mare family continues to influence the breed today, just as it does through Makala NA, Maximillion NA, and countless descendants around the world.

Viewed individually, these horses represent notable achievements in their own right. Viewed collectively, they reveal something even more meaningful.

When examined together, their pedigrees tell a remarkable story. The names change. The generations advance. Yet the same foundation appears time and again—WA Marlaina Lee, Margarita PSY, Padrons Psyche, Ever After NA, and the carefully cultivated mare families that Robert and Dixie spent decades building.

They are evidence that the Norths’ breeding philosophy continues to work.

Generation after generation, the qualities they valued most—beauty, athleticism, Arabian type, disposition, and enduring breeding value—continue to emerge in the horses carrying the North Arabians name and pedigrees.

These horses are more than winners.

They are the living continuation of the North Arabians story.

The success of North Arabians was never built solely upon acquiring great horses.

It was built upon what Robert and Dixie did after those horses arrived.

They cared for them.

They believed in them.

They planned around them.

They gave them the opportunity to shape future generations.

Whether it was WA Marlaina Lee, Lumiar Amadeus, Padrons Psyche, *Sir Fames HBV, Margarita PSY, Ever After NA, or the many mares and stallions that followed, Robert and Dixie approached each horse with a long-term vision. They understood that the greatest contributions to the breed are rarely measured in a single championship season.

They are measured in the generations that follow.

That philosophy became the foundation upon which North Arabians was built.

And perhaps that is the greatest lesson found within the North Arabians story.

The Arabian horse has always offered something far greater than ribbons, trophies, or championships.

It offers a way of life.

Whether experienced through breeding, showing, riding, or simply enjoying the companionship of a horse in the pasture, the Arabian horse has a unique ability to bring people together, create lifelong friendships, and inspire journeys that often last a lifetime.

For Robert and Dixie, that journey spanned more than fifty years.

Through the Arabian horse they built a family of friends, a respected breeding program, and a legacy that will continue long after the final chapter of North Arabians has been written.

In many ways, their story serves as a reminder that the true reward has never been found in the championship photograph.

It has always been found in the life lived along the way.

The Final Chapter

In 2025, after more than five decades devoted to the Arabian horse, Robert and Dixie North made the difficult decision to retire from active breeding.

Like all great breeding programs, North Arabians eventually reached a moment when the next chapter looked different from those that came before it. The foaling stalls that once welcomed generations of hopeful young horses grew quiet. The carefully planned matings that occupied decades of thought and discussion came to an end.

Many of the horses that carried the North Arabians banner found new homes and new opportunities around the world.

Padrons Psyche, whose influence reshaped the Arabian breed, spent his final years in Europe before his passing. *Sir Fames HBV, whose bloodlines helped carry the program into a new generation, is gone. Ever After NA, the homebred stallion who embodied so much of Robert and Dixie’s breeding vision, has also passed into history.

Yet North Arabians remains.

The People Behind the Legacy

The story of North Arabians would also be incomplete without recognizing the countless individuals who helped transform Robert and Dixie’s vision into reality.

While breeding programs are often associated with the names of their founders, the truth is that no successful breeding program is built alone.

Over the course of more than five decades, North Arabians was supported by an extraordinary community of horsemen and horsewomen whose contributions helped shape the program’s success. Stallion owners who entrusted their horses to carefully planned breeding decisions. Mare owners who believed in the Norths’ vision and invested in generations yet to be born. Trainers who dedicated countless hours to developing and presenting North Arabians horses in the show ring. Veterinarians, breeding specialists, farm staff, and industry professionals whose expertise helped guide the program through every stage of its evolution.

Just as important were the owners and breeders around the world who chose to purchase, promote, and breed North Arabians horses. Their belief in the program extended its influence far beyond the rolling hills of Southern California, carrying North Arabians bloodlines throughout North America, South America, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East.

Many of the horses celebrated throughout this story achieved their greatest successes only because others recognized their potential and were willing to invest their own time, resources, and dreams in helping them reach it.

The Norths have long understood that breeding is a collaborative endeavor. Great horses may be born on one farm, but their stories are often written by many hands.

To attempt to name every individual who contributed to the success of North Arabians would require chapters in and of itself. The people who helped build this legacy know who they are. They know the friendships forged, the horses shared, the victories celebrated, the disappointments overcome, and the countless memories made along the way.

One day, perhaps, that chapter will be written on a more personal level—with individual stories, cherished memories, and a heartfelt note of gratitude to those who walked this journey alongside Robert and Dixie.

For now, it is enough to simply say thank you.

Thank you to every owner, breeder, trainer, employee, veterinarian, supporter, and friend who believed in the vision, contributed to the journey, and helped shape the legacy of North Arabians.

In countless ways, that legacy belongs to all of you as well.

Today, the rolling Southern California ranch that served as the heart of the program stands quieter than it once did. Offered for sale, it no longer echoes with the anticipation of the next foal crop or the excitement of preparing young horses for the show ring.

Instead, it serves a different purpose.

The pastures are home to the retired mares who helped build the program.

These are the mares whose names may not always have appeared in headlines, but whose contributions made every success possible. The mares who carried generations of hope, promise, and possibility. The mares who gave Robert and Dixie the horses, the memories, and the legacy that would define North Arabians.

There is something fitting about that.

For all the celebrated stallions that passed through the gates of North Arabians, Robert and Dixie always believed that great breeding programs were built upon great mares. It seems only appropriate that the final chapter of the farm they built should be devoted to honoring the horses that gave so much in return.

Today, the influence of North Arabians can still be found in breeding programs throughout North America, South America, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East. It lives within pedigrees. It lives within breeding philosophies. It lives within the horses themselves.

Most importantly, it lives within the countless breeders who learned that excellence is not achieved through shortcuts, trends, or luck, but through patience, conviction, and a willingness to think beyond the next horse and focus instead on the next generation.

That is the legacy of Robert and Dixie North.

The breeding program may have ended.

The legacy endures.

And the influence of North Arabians lives on.
